Gote Gokigen  Nakabisha  is  one  of  the  most  popular  openings  today  .  This  opening  starts  with  the  moves  shown  above .

Sente advances  the  2nd  file  Pawn with  P-2e  and  threatens  unprotected  Gote's  Bishop  head .
Gote already  can't  avoid  Sente's  2nd  file  Pawn  exchange . Gote must  get  something  in  return  for  allowing  the Pawn exchange .

In diagram 2 , there are 2 way  that  Gote  canselect  . In both line Gote is preparing  acounterattack or counter plan .

The  diagram 3 is the  most  common  line of  Gokigen  Nakabisha . After the diagram  3 ,  insome  lines the games  will  advnce  quietstrategic  games , and  in other  lines the games  will  advance  very attacking  games .

In this line , Sente makes  the  game  quiet &strategic  one  by exchanging  the Bishops . Thisline is  called  MARUYAMA's  vaccin.This line isnamed  after  MARUYAMA  Tadahisa ,the  firstplayer  who  selected  this  line and  won .

In this line , G-7h  may seem  strange  move ,because  the piece  leaves from  threatened  5th  file . But this  move  has  an important meaning .

The 7h-Gold  protects the 8h-piece , and  enables  the  2nd  file Pawn  exchange safely . Without  7h-Gold , if  Sente  exchanges  the  2nd  file  Pawn  ,Gote's  Bishop dropping on 3c  is a fork  2d-Rook  and 8h-Silver . (more detail  please see 4.P-2d lineor Go-Hachi Kin migi Kyusen line )

After  4.G-7h , there  are  2 major  lines .

In this line  ,  Sente  gives  up  the 2nd  file  Pawnexchange  , and  allows  Gote  to makeGosuji  Kuraidori Nakabishaformation .

In most cases , Gote advances  the 5th file Pawn  and  transpositons toGosuji KuraidoriNakabisha.

After the diagram 8 , there are 2 major  lines . The1st is  advancing the left  Silver  and  aiming at 5e-Pawn . The 2nd  is  making  safty Kakoi  include  Ibisha Anaguma and  Hidari mino.
