Yamajunn's Basic Shogi Opening

classical Kakukawari opening

This  page  shows  the  detail  of  classcial  Kakukawariopening .

(diagram 1)

The  moves  up to  the  diagram 1
1.P-7f   P-8d
2.P-2f
(diagram 1)

Sente opens  his  Bishop line  with  1.P-7f  and  Gote  pushes  his  Rook  Pawn  with  1...P-8d .

If  Gote  dislike  Kakukawari ,  he  can  decline  it  with  1...P-3d , and  the  game  will  advance  Yokofutori ,  Ittezon Kakukawari,GoteFuribishaor other  openings .

Sente's 2nd  move ; 2.P-2f  shows  he  wants toselect  Kakukawari.  In stead  of  2.P-2f , 2.S-6h  means  Sente wants  to  select  Yagura (or  Furibisha) .

The  moves  shown  below  also  up  to  the  diagram 1.
1.P-2f  P-8d
2.P-7f
(diagram 1)

(diagram 2)

moves from  the  diagram 1
2...P-8e
3.P-2e  G-3b
(diagram 2)

Gote  advances  the 8th file  Pawn  with  2...P-8e .This  move  usually means  Gote  accepts  Sente's  choice .

In stead  of  2...P-8e , 2...G-3b is  also  effective  choice . About this move  please  see Modern  Kakukawari  opening  page .

Sente  also  advances  the  2nd  file  Pawn  with  3.P-2e . You  may  think  Gote  can  exchange  the8th  file  Pawn  with  3...P-8f  , but  this  is a bad  move  . (see  Yamajunn's  shogi opening  traps)

If  Gote  opens  his  Bishop  line  with  3...P-3d  instead  of  3...G-3b  ,  the  game  will  transposition  to  Yokofutori or  Ittezon  Kakukawari opening .

(diagram 3)

moves  from  the  diagram 2
4.B-7g   P-3d
5.S-8h
(diagram 3)

Sente  moves  up  his  Bishop  with  4.B-7g  to  decline  the  8th  file  Pawn  exchange . After  4.B-7g , Gote can't  select  Yokofutori or  IttezonKakukawari .

In stead of  4.B-7g , by 4.P-2d , Sente  can  exchange  the  2nd  file  Pawn  and  the  game will  transposition  to  Aigakari opening . But if  he  wants  Aigakari opening  , the  following  starting  moves  is  superior  to  this  line ; 1.P-2f P-8d , 2.P-2e P-8e . Because  in 4.P-2d line , Sente already  pushed  the  7th  file  Pawn  and  allows  Gote toexchange  the 8th file Pawn exchange .

Gote opens  his  Bishop  line  with 4...P-3d . If  Gote  plays  other  move  in  his  4th  move ,Sente can  exchange  the 2nd  file Pawns .

Sente  moves  up his left  Silver  with  5.S-8h toprepare  a Bishop  exchange . 5.S-6h  has  same  meaning . In stead of 5.S-8h , 5.P-6f  will  make  the game  transpositioned  toYaguragame . But ifSente  wants  Yaguraopening , 1.P-7f P-8d , 2.S-6h is more natural  starting .

(diagram 4)

moves from  the  diagram 3
5...Bx7g+
6.Sx7g   S-2b
(diagram 4)

Gote exchanges  the  Bishops with 5...Bx7g+ . 5...Bx7g=  also  runs  same  line . Sente naturally  captured  the  7g-promoted Bishop  with  6.Sx7g .

After the Bishop  exchange , Gote  moves  up  his  left  Silver  with  6...S-2b . By this move , Gotedeclines  the  2nd  file  Pawn  exchange .

If  Sente  tries  to  exchange  the  2nd  file  Pawnwith  7.P-2d  ,  how  the  game  will  advance  ?

(diagram 5)

moves  from the diagram 4
7.S-3h   S-7b
8.G-7h  S-3c
(diagram 5)

Sente  advances  the  right  Silver  with  7.S-3h .

Gote also  moves  up  his right  Silver  with  7...S-7b  . Just  after  the  move , Gote's  2nd  file ; 2dseems  to  be  unprotected . But  Sente  can't  exchange  the 2nd  file  Pawns  without  losing  advantage .  (more detail about this line ,  please  see  my blog  Yamajunn's  Shogi  Opening  traps)

Sente  moves  up  the  left  Gold  to  protect  the  left  side  of  his  camp . Gote  moves up  his  left  Silver  with 8...S-3c to protect  the 2nd  file .
